Psychological skills training (PST) refers to a systematic and consistent practice of mental or psychological skills for enhancing performance, increasing enjoyment, or achieving greater sport and physical activity or self-satisfaction. Athletes should understand the basics. The optimal performance ability accrues under moderate stress/tension/ pressure. An athlete performs the best under medium levels of stress /tension / pressure, but when the stress / tension/ pressure is high or low, then the stress / tension/ pressure does not help the athlete. Every athlete should know the difference between Arousal and Anxiety because these are different states.
Arousal Is a general physiological and psychological state of activation and the ability to react to stimuli. This state varying on a continuum from deep sleep to intense excitement. Arousal activates the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system, which can be leading to increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, a state of sensory attention, sweating, movement, and willingness to respond to any effect. Also, not all cortical arousals or their consequences are the same. Trusted Source
Usually, it’s good to have arousal during a workout, but this state shouldn’t continue to a long time after a workout, because that can lead to health issues because for example long term high pressure is not good for health. remember that you should control your Arousal.
Anxiety (Anxiety) is an uncontrollable negative emotional state such as nervousness, worry, irrational, hesitation, stupidity, disorder. Usually, it’s difficult to communicate with people who have anxiety, because they change their thinking from minute to minute, and they are bad in decision making. There are also many serious medical conditions. That is associated with anxiety such as heart disease or diabetes, that’s why called a mental disorder or Anxiety disorder. This state is uncontrollable and takes a little while. when this state takes a long time then can lead to depression.
Depression is a condition, in which a person feels unmotivated, weak, discouraged, unable to do actions alone, sad, feels lonely, hopeless, unsocial, or disinterested in life in general. people especially athletes should be aware of their psychological state. Because performance can be influenced even by motivation. There is an inner and an outer motive that drives the athlete to sport. If the sporting challenge is carried out, to accommodate curiousness, joy, or knowledge, then the driving force is considered to have an inner motive.
